DiGiornos Pizza Shows Us How To NOT Use Hashtags

Social Media SUCKS for DiGiorno Pizza with one careless tweet last night that put their reputation at risk.

After a video of Ray Rice punching his then-fiancee Janay Palmer surfaced, which led to his termination from the Baltimore Ravens, thousands of women jumped on Twitter to discuss their physically and emotionally negative experiences in abusive situations. They used the #WhyIStayed hashtag to contest the victim-blaming attitude which was that of Palmer’s critics, who constantly questioned why she would marry someone who would knock her out.

 

Jumping onto the popular hashtag, DiGiorno clearly didn’t look into its context before tweeting, “#whyistayed You had pizza.”

A Look Into The New York Times Innovation Report 2014

As my friend C.C. Chapman so brilliantly put it, “I don’t say this lightly, but this is a MUST read for anyone creating content of any sort in today’s digital world. It is long, but they went through the leaked internal report and highlighted the main talking points. It is full of great nuggets and this is better than any ‘Top 10 reasons….’ posts you’ll read today. I promise.”

I couldn’t agree more. The only thing I might argue is that the leak is never an accident. This needed to happen, both internally and externally to help get a more accurate read of how the New York Times fits into this gigantic digital space, and what is to come.
